How Learning a Foreign Language Helps Your Kids

Learning a foreign language is being added to graduation requirements in many high schools. Undoubtedly it is imperative to have a solid grasp of the English language, but study of a second language is important for success as well.

Many people have difficulty learning a foreign language. It doesn't come overnight, but with perseverance, most students will achieve a minimum proficiency. Giving students a choice of languages is helpful. Most U.S. students learn French, Spanish or Latin, but some schools offer Russian, German, or even Chinese.

So, what are the advantages of studying another language?

Improve Scholastic Achievement

Research shows that learning another language can improve reading skills, and knowledge of English structure and vocabulary. More surprising, students who began studying a foreign language in kindergarten had surpassed national averages in all subjects by the time they reached fifth grade, particularly in mathematics. Also, foreign language study helps:

Better Standardized Test Scores

There are many studies which show that students who study a foreign language tend to score higher on standardized tests. According to the College Board, which administers the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), students who take a minimum of four years of a foreign language scored more than 100 points higher on each section of the SAT compared to students studying a half year or less.

Other studies relate bilingual proficiency with higher scores on tests of both verbal and nonverbal intelligence.

Second language students improve their chances of college acceptance. Students are likely to earn better grades in college and less likely to drop out.

Learning a Second Language Improves Career Opportunities

There are many ways learning a second language can benefit your career. A growing number of businesses work closely with individuals in other countries, either within their own company, or with other companies or governments. People are vital who can communicate in foreign languages and comprehend different customs.

Increasing numbers of of Americans speak languages other than English. In order to communicate with as many people as possible, many professionals will find it helpful to speak another language. Some of these include doctors and nurses, social workers, police and firefighters, hotel managers, etc. Other areas where knowing a second language is either beneficial or necessary include government, the military, law, sales and marketing, travel and hospitality, teaching, translation and communications.

The world seems to be getting smaller all the time. Even the U.S. is steadily growing more multicultural and multiethnic.

Studying a foreign language improves cultural understanding and relations. Studies have even found that people who know a second language are more tolerant of other cultures. Being able to reach out to other human beings benefits societies and increases world security.
