Homeschooling – A Different Approach To Education

Homeschooling is a common concept in developed countries and refers to a system whereby a child is educated at home. Homeschooling kids do not go to school and receive education at home triggering off a wide debate among supporters and opponents of this system. In US, all the states have granted legal sanction to homeschooling.

Parents opt for homeschooling on various grounds that include unsatisfactory school records or even lack of access to good schools. Parents can also opt for home schooling on religious grounds as granted by a decree of the Supreme Court.

Though homeschooling is legal, it cannot be used to justify denial of proper education for children which can lead to a case of child neglect. While homeschooling has won legal approval, denial of education to a child is an infringement of the constitutional right to education of a child and amount to child abuse. With easy access to multiple resources via the internet, parents today have a wide repertoire of resource material to use in home education.

While children do not attend classes in regular schools, most homeschooling also requires a formal structured curriculum. When homeschooling does not follow such a structured pattern of study, it is normally referred to as unschooling. Another version of homeschooling is natural schooling which basically is knowledge gained through knowledge building experiences.

Different types of homeschooling approaches are available to parents today. Classical education, Waldorf education, Thomas Jefferson Education and Montessori method are only some of the many available options for a parent to choose from. In fact Montessori and Waldorf approaches to education have been adopted in quite a few schools in the past few years. Today colleges and universities also have new admission procedures to accommodate students from various educational backgrounds including homeschooling.

Parents can take the help of formal educated teachers to assist in home schooling. As a matter of fact states have their own rules regarding homeschooling and some may insist on certified tutors to handle such cases. Some states may also insist on proper sanctions from state authorities for homeschooling of kids and may also demand registration of such students with an independent educational institute.

Though homeschooling has its advantages, its major disadvantage is that children may not be able to develop sufficient debate and interactive skills due to non availability of companions in the peer group unless the homeschooling is structured in a manner that helps them overcome this disadvantage.
